This coming Wednesday, May 31, the Tobacco Working Group is launching our Speak Up for Smoke-Free Campaign with site visits and activities to promote safe, smoke-free workplaces.

We all want safe, smoke-free workplaces. Next week, the tobacco working group will be at sites across Fraser Health helping that happen.

This is a new campaign to support our staff in ensuring a 100 per cent non-smoking workplace for employees and patients by 2019.

We’re kicking off the campaign with visits to several sites where tobacco working group members and site leadership will meet with employees, answer questions and share our campaign buttons and materials.

Watch for us at sites across the region: Royal Columbian Hospital, Langley Memorial Hospital, Peace Arch Hospital, Surrey Memorial Hospital and the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre, and more.

Also on May 31, which is World No-Tobacco Day, we will be hosting a live, interactive Q&A on Twitter (@Fraserhealth) from 10-11 a.m. Submit a question with the hashtag #fhsmokefree.

I will be online answering questions from the public about some of the best ways to start and stick to a smoke-free lifestyle and help improve understanding of our Fraser Health smoke-free policy.

In the coming weeks, follow our campaign with articles in The Beat and online:

  • You’ll hear right from your peers about real techniques they use to end smoking on our properties.
  • You’ll learn why your colleagues think it is important to play their part in maintaining our community standards.
  • You’ll hear directly from our patients about how smoking on our properties affects them.
  • You’ll read about what finally helped real smokers to quit for good – insight you can use to help your own patients comply with the smoke-free policy.

We’ll also share a wealth of stories, posters, resources and tools with you in a new toolkit we will distribute over the coming months, which facility management, site leaders and interested staff can use to help support our Smoke-Free Policy at your workplaces.

Please join us this month as we Speak Up for Smoke-Free. When we all speak together, we can breathe easy.
