Cool weather and rain didn't keep over 60 Fraser Health staff from Central City away from SFU Surrey's annual Terry Fox event, where our health superheroes teamed up--and dressed up--to walk the talk for better health.

Fraser Health staff at Central City joined together to participate for a third year in SFU Surrey’s Terry Fox Walk/Run on September 30th. Led by Fraser Health’s Engagement Radicals, concerted networking efforts paid off this year with over 60 staff members coming out in spite of cool rainy weather. The event gave Fraser Health a chance to literally “walk our talk” on the importance of leading a healthy active lifestyle.

This year the Engagement Radicals offered a staff challenge: form a team, decide on a team “theme,” and dress up accordingly—with a $50 Starbucks coffee award for the “Most Enthusiastic Team.” By event day, five Fraser Health teams had entered with all manner of costumes on display. Career Recruitment Services took the coveted coffee prize with their impressive “Princesses and Superheros” costumes, impressive turn-out (25 members!), and the heartwarming fact that they were doing double-duty as cancer-fighters that day: in addition to the Terry Fox event, they also took part in an all-day princess and superhero challenge for Childhood Cancer Canada, inspired by a co-worker’s grandchild’s fight with Burkitt’s Lymphoma. SFU Surrey also awarded two “team spirit” awards this year, and Fraser Health teams won both of these prizes. Between the Terry Fox Foundation and Childhood Cancer Canada, our five Fraser Health teams raised $2,755 to fight cancer.

The event not only demonstrated our commitment to active living, but it also built camaraderie across Central City work groups, and we even did some successful fundraising for worthy health causes in the process.

Next year, we’d like to extend this event to other Fraser Health work sites in the region. If you’d like to organize a team at your work site next year, get in touch with organizer Tobin Copley. There might even be coffee in it for your team!
