Meet Nisha Esmail, Director, Workforce Optimization, who says a meaningful moment she shared with a nurse as a child inspired her career in health care.
Meet Nisha Esmail, Director, Workforce Optimization, Central City.
“I was diagnosed with a serious heart defect and had open heart surgery at BC Children’s Hospital at 11. As I was being wheeled in to the operating room I asked the nurse if I was going to die. She held my hand and said, ‘We’re going to take very good care of you.’ That’s when I realized I wanted to go into health care.
I began volunteering at age 12. First Burnaby Hospital, then Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children and, for years, as a wish granter for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. I became a postpartum nurse at BC Women’s Hospital, but wanted to be more involved in shaping the delivery of health care. So I got my Master’s in health administration and worked for the College of Physicians and Surgeons and St. Paul’s Hospital before joining Fraser Health in 2014.
Working in staffing services is like solving a puzzle. Helping Northern Health during last summer’s wildfires was a proud moment. Our employees were ready to drop everything to help. I take pride knowing I’m helping ensure the right staff are in the right place to serve our patients at their most vulnerable, so others get the support I had.”
