Each day I come to work in an organization that not only provides health care services to the most diverse population in the province but also has highly diverse care providers.

Respect and care for patients are at the heart of our practice. To me treating others with dignity and respect requires an appreciation and, to the extent possible, accommodation of our patients’ values, practices and beliefs. This is vital as we foster a culture of care that is culturally appropriate and diversity competent for the communities we serve.

Respect also means that care providers strive to develop a shared understanding of decisions and care plans between care teams and patients, in a manner that meets patient’s needs.

Working with and for a multicultural, multilingual, diverse population brings about communication challenges. To make sure we continue to communicate effectively with patients, clients, residents, families and care providers, the Diversity Services Department supports our care teams with effective communication tools and services. For example, language services provide interpretation and translation services to communicate with patients who have limited English proficiency. Through a regional educational strategy we also provide on-going training and education on how to provide diversity competent care.
